The weather had been very freaky - Purros had been cut-off after Sesfontein for some weeks earlier in the year, and no-one could give any reliable update on the state of it now. Given that, Rach was not having any of it - The episodes in the river were adding to her increasing anxiety (more to follow as the story unfolds!)

The weather really was a unifying topic of conversation from Cape to Nairobi. Stella was talking about people dying from cold as they slept, as well as drownings.

All in all a shame as I remain jealous of your elephant charge their!

Pot and kettle! Hope all is well with you both and the diving and driving in Mozam' is good. (You have to respect a country with an Ak47 on its flag after all)

I don't remember the road to Puros being too bad, but you are right that we did do it before the bad rains last year. Never mind - you saw plenty of Nambia anyway. Keep catching up with the blogs Richard!!!!!

It was very exciting in Solitaire, as the 'staff' managed to set a grass fire near the accommodation - lots of running about, laughing and consternation (the latter mainly from the whites) - funny to watch!

Personally, I prefer my apple-pies sans cinnamon - just like my nan used to make. They're probably the best in Namibia, but then I don't think Moose (baker and head honcho in Solitaire) can have been to Wales! Still the bread and pastries are also to be commended, and we did take a fair few pie portions with us to boot - so maybe I'm being over critical!

Wow Richard - I have to say I admire your honesty in this blog. Off course your trip was going to be harder for both of you than the rest of us... nothing you have said here comes as any surprise. Well done to you both for achieving your dream - 99% of the world don't. T&C xx

Twenty plus in the Zambezi valley. Now in Mazabuka on the sugar estate (the largest single refinery in Africa)
Saw a sugar cane burn off last night - the field is being harvested today. From start flames quickly to 15m high (judged from the adjacent 6m telephone wire poles) smoke pall km high before dying to nothing all in ten minutes! Something spectacular to think about when having your cuppa.
